How do you know?

How do you know what level your friendship is at with someone? How do you know if you can really trust someone? How do you know if the people around you are truly your friends or they just want to get something from you?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. 6 It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

You know you have real friends when you have people around you that demonstrate these characteristics. So let me ask a few question:

Are there people around you that are patient and kind to you when others would not be?

Do they rejoice with you when things go well rather than compete with you to one up you?

Are they willing to submit to you and you to them in a given circumstance or do one of you always have to get your way?

Do they want to be around you or do you seem to be irritating to them?

Are they quick to forgive? I am so blessed with a few folks in my life who are very close to me and are very gracious. Praise God. He knows exactly what I need.

Will they allow you to believe lies because they don’t care enough to confront you? I have also been blessed with people who are willing to tell me the truth.

Will they give up on you or will they be there through every circumstance both good and bad?

I can honestly say there are a lot of people in my life, but there is a group that I think will never give up and will endure through every circumstance. Those are the people you know are your friends.

Do you have these types of people in your life? People who are willing to truly demonstrate biblical love? Are you this type of person?

What a great day

Today was another great day of worship at Southbridge. We had more people than we have ever had there before, well over 700. Several families dedicated their children to the Lord, and we got real about conflict. We were not talking about conflict because there is some major conflict, but because we are going verse by verse through the book of James and we came to James 4 where James asks the question: “What causes fights and quarrels among you?” Today’s message was the first of a two part message on conflict where we look at the cause of conflict. If you want to hear the message you can listen to it here: What is the cause of conflict? Next week we will talk about the cure for conflict. I hope to see you there.

March Madness

Living in ACC land it is almost an obligation that somehow March Madness gets mentioned. The Sweet Sixteen has been decided. My MSU Spartans pulled of the win against USC and they have advanced, UNC has advanced and my brackets while they did not have Cleveland State beating Wake are still looking ok (14 of 16 so far).

For God so loved…

Today I got a call from Shanna telling me that Ella our three year old was telling Ava our youngest daughter some life lessons and busted out with John 3:16 almost word for word.

Every night we pray over our girls before we go to bed. My primary prayer for them is that they come to know Jesus at an early age. Ella has told people who have been working at our house that Jesus died on the cross for their sins. She tells us how much God loves her and that Jesus died for her. Today she quoted John 3:16 as a life lesson to her little sister, but when we sit down and talk with her about her trusting Christ she is not quite there yet. She has seemed very close, in fact one night I thought she was going to pray to receive Christ. However, she did not that night. More than wanting our children to modify their behavior to make our lives or even their lives easier we long for them to know Jesus. That is our primary prayer. We love that she knows verses about Jesus, we pray that she comes to know Jesus.

What about you?

You may be able to answer yes to many of these questions: Do you know John 3:16? Do you know the facts of the gospel? Do you know how to tell somone that Jesus died for their sins? Can you give some good life lessons, maybe even quoting verses? The big question is do you know Jesus?
