Discernment or opinion?

We all have times when we seek advice from others. How do you know who to ask? It seems that while everyone has an opinion, certain people have true discernment. Where does that discernment come from? I remember while I was taking classes at DTS, I had several decisions to make. I had one friend who I would talk to during these times because he seemed to have that genuine discernment. I asked him one time why he was so wise. When he answered he told me how one of his mentors taught him that everyday as part of his time reading the Word he would read a chapter from the book of Proverbs. Since there are 31 of them, there is basically one for everyday of the month. If we are seeking God’s wisdom it makes sense we would read from God’s Wisdom literature.

Here is one that stuck out to me today:

Proverbs 14:30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

God has been giving me verses on peace lately. I know I am at peace with God, but I am still don’t fully understand the peace of God.

Ten things list

Yesterday, at Southbridge a friend of mine: Peter Rochelle spoke on being filled with the Spirit from Ephesians 5:18-21. He pointed out that spirit filled people are thankful people (Ephesians 5:20). So am I thankful? I certainly desire to be spirit filled, and as I was talking to God I started to think about things I am thankful for and classified them in lists of ten. Ten things I am thankful for concerning God’s character and activity in my life:

1. My salvation. That while I am still a sinful person Jesus died for me.

2. Daily forgiveness. That I can experience true cleansing even after salvation.

3. Grace. Common  grace that we all experience and special grace for those who know Jesus.

4. Wrath. The fact that God is righteous and just makes His grace and forgiveness even more meaningful.

5. Love. Without His demonstration of love, we would have a twisted and distorted view of true love.

6. Giving. I am incredibly grateful that God is a giver and not a taker. He loved us so much He gave His only Son (John 3:16).

7. Freedom. That there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ (Rom 8:1; John 3:17).

8. Relationship. That God desires a relationship with us (John 17:3).

9. That eternal life starts now, not later in heaven (again John 17:3).

10. Wisdom. That I can trust God has infinite wisdom when I cannot understand.

The Latest at Southbridge

One of the latest things we have been doing at Southbridge has been our 411 video announcements during our service countdown. This element of our service keeps everyone updated on the latest things happening at church. If you have not been coming early to the services you probably have not seen this yet, and may not know the latest on what is happening. To see the 411 click on the video below (on facebook go to view original post).

Information overload or information selectivity?

It is astounding how much information is flowing at us everyday. The average American sees thousands of advertisements everyday, not to mention news stories, quick facts, and every other form of information that is flowing out there. Here is my question. What if we did not have all of this information? Would we be any worse off?

In a culture of information overload it seems that we need is to be much more selective to what we give our attention. While I love to learn, I sometimes intentionally don’t read or view things that are very popular. This is not to be a culture snob, but why spend the time to filter through laborious details when you will eventually gather all of the information from conversations with other people who have already done all of the work for you. We need to be more selective in what we take in both in quality and quantity. Information is flowing at a faster rate than ever before. What do you plan to do about it?
