We have seen God do some amazing things in these first five years since we launched our church. We have seen God draw new believers into relationship with Jesus and we’ve seen Him continue to lead others as they walk in the life Jesus has given. We have been blessed with life change and God continues to move in our lives. With new believers and others realizing God is at work here, we’ve also seen numeric growth. Soon after we launched Southbridge, we went to two services. Shortly after beginning two services we reached capacity. We quickly realized we had maxed out the Brier Creek movie theater’s capacity. With increasing attendance and increased activity during the week, we really felt stuck after only a few short years of existence. So, two years ago we began an initiative called TBI (The Bridge Initiative) to raise money for a future facility – whether that be land, lease or a building. On May 13th 2012, we announced that God has answered our prayers regarding a future location in Brier Creek. See below video for the announcement.

We praise God for how He has led us. We keep praying that we do not get ahead of Him and that we don’t miss out on what He is doing. Please pray with us and rejoice. The days ahead are exciting and God will have new challenges for us. Let’s go.

(For multiple reasons I, along with the leadership of Southbridge, ask you not to go out on this property at this time. In the future we will go out there together).

In many regards church membership for all practical purposes seems meaningless to many people. Why should I become a member, when I can have all of the “benefits” without membership? Is that really true? What does the Bible actually say about membership?

Church membership is not like membership to a local country club where, “when you pay, you get to stay” and enjoy the benefits. Church membership for believers is about being devoted to one another (Romans 12:10, Acts 2:42). Church membership is a submission to spiritual authority. Church membership is a form of spiritual accountability to a group of believers and to a watching world. Church membership is God’s plan for believers in this time. So what does the Bible actually teach about church membership? The following is a helpful resource from the website: 9 Marks Building a Healthy Church.

Where do we see church membership in the New Testament?

Matthew 18:15-17: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault…if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you…If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.” The ability to exclude someone from “the church” presupposes that it’s known who belongs to “the church” as a member in the first place.

Acts 5:12-13: “Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem.” So, people faced the decision of whether or not they would join the church in Jerusalem. This joining is more public and definite than an informal association.

In 1 Timothy 5:9-12, Paul gives Timothy instructions for enrolling widows on the list of those receiving support from the church. He writes, “Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband, and having a reputation for good works…” While this isn’t conclusive evidence for formal church membership, it’s tough to imagine that the church in Ephesus would have kept a list of widows but not have any formal means of identifying everyone who belonged to the church.

1 Corinthians 5:12-13: “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside.” Paul called upon the Corinthian church to judge those who were inside the church, not those who were outside. They were responsible for the testimony of those who belonged to the church, not those who didn’t. This passage makes no sense if the Corinthian church didn’t have some public, formal means by which people identified themselves with the church.

2 Corinthians 2:6: Paul writes concerning a man the Corinthian church had excommunicated, “For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.” This man’s exclusion from the church was a punishment by the majority. You can’t have a majority unless you have a definite set of people from which a majority is constituted.

According to Scripture, why should every Christian join a church?

Every Christian should join a church because Scripture requires it. Granted, there is no direct command in Scripture that says, “Every Christian must join a local church,” but two factors in Scripture indicate that every Christian should be a member of a local church.

Jesus established the church to be a public, earthly institution that would mark out, affirm, and oversee those who profess to believe in him (Matt. 16:18-19, 18:15-20). Jesus established the church to publicly declare those who belong to him in order to give the world a display of the good news about himself (John 17:21, 23; see also Eph. 3:10). Jesus wants the world to know who belongs to him and who doesn’t. And how is the world to know who belongs to him and who doesn’t? They are to see which people publicly identify themselves with his people in the visible, public institution he established for this very purpose. They’re to look at the members of his church. And if some people claim to be part of the universal church even though they belong to no local church, they reject Jesus’ plan for them and his church. Jesus intends for his people to be marked out as a visible, public group, which means joining together in local churches.

Scripture repeatedly commands Christians to submit to their leaders (Heb. 13:17; 1 Thess. 5:12-13). The only way to do that is by publicly committing to be members of their flock, and saying in effect, “I commit to listening to your teaching, following your direction, and to submitting to your leadership.” There’s no way to obey the scriptural commands to submit to your leaders if you never actually submit to them by joining a local church.

What are some other reasons to join a church?

In addition to the New Testament’s teaching that every Christian should submit to a local church and its leaders (see Matt. 18:15-20, Heb. 13:17), there are many other good reasons to join a church:

Assure yourself. Membership is the church’s way of affirming the validity of someone’s profession of faith (Matt. 16:19, 18:18). The church looks at a person’s life, hears their explanation of the gospel and how they came to believe it, and says, “You look like a Christian to us. So join us. Watch over our lives and we’ll watch over yours.” So, while membership in a church doesn’t guarantee that someone is a Christian, it should assure believers of the genuineness of their faith.

Evangelize the world. We can preach the gospel to our community and the world much better together than we can apart. Not only that, but as we covenant with other Christians to love, encourage and admonish one another, we display a living, breathing image of the gospel to the world.

Expose false gospels. As the members of a church support and submit to its teaching, they collectively say, “This is the truth! World, pay attention!” and their unity in doing so works to expose corruptions and imitations of the true gospel.

Edify the church. When we join a local church we let the pastors and other members of that church know that we intend to attend regularly, give faithfully, pray for the church, and serve the church as we have opportunity. We allow fellow believers to have greater expectations of us in these areas, and we hold them responsible in these ways as well. So join a church in order to build it up (Eph. 4:11-16). You can do far more to build up the church as a committed member than as a detached, autonomous attender. And it will do good to your own soul as well.

Glorify God. Jesus told his disciples, “A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35, NIV). We testify to the world about what God is like by how we love one another—and a committed, persevering, accountable love is a far greater picture of God’s love than a picky-and-choosy, I’ll-only-be-involved-with-the-people-I-want kind of “love.” By committing to one another as members of the same church we display the glory of God’s love—a committed, persevering, transforming love—as we image it in our lives together, and so bring him glory.

In my reading this week in preparation for Sundays sermon on a New Kind of Community from Acts 2:42-47, I read John MacArthur’s commentary on the passage. In it he cites this excerpt from the second century philosopher Aristides. I thought it was challenging to read and think about what would be said to the King or President today about Christianity:

Now the Christians, O king, by going about and seeking have found the truth. For they know and trust in God, the Maker of heaven and earth, who has no fellow. From him they receive those commandments which they have engraved on their minds, and which they observe in the hope and expectation of the world to come.

For this reason they do not commit adultery or immorality; they do not bear false witness, or embezzle, nor do they covet what is not theirs. They honor their father and mother, and do good to those who are their neighbors. Whenever they are judges, they judge uprightly. They do not worship idols made in the image of man. Whatever they do not wish that others should do to them, they in turn do not do; and they do not eat the food sacrificed to idols.

Those who oppress them they exhort and make them their friends. They do good to their enemies. Their wives, O King, are pure as virgins, and their daughters are modest. Their men abstain from all unlawful sexual contact and from impurity, in the hope of recompense that is to come in another world.

As for their bondmen and bondwomen, and their children, if there are any, they persuade them to become Christians; and when they have done so, they call them brethren without distinction.

They refuse to worship strange gods; and they go their way in all humility and cheerfulness. Falsehood is not found among them. They love one another; the widows needs are not ignored, and they rescue the orphan from the person who does him violence. He who has gives to him who has not, ungrudgingly and without boasting. When the Christians find a stranger, they bring him into their homes and rejoice over him as a true brother. They do not call brothers those who are bound by blood ties alone, but those who are brethren after the Spirit and in God.

When one of their poor passes away from the world, each provides for his burial according to his ability. If they hear of any of their number who are imprisoned or oppressed for the name of the Messiah, they all provide for his needs, and if it is possible to redeem him, they set him free.

If they find poverty in their midst, and they do not have spare food, they fast two or three days in order that the needy might be supplied with the necessities. They observe scrupulously the commandments of their Messiah, living honestly and soberly as the Lord their God ordered them. Every morning and every hour they praise and thank God for his goodness to them; and for their food and drink they offer thanksgiving.

If any righteous person of their number passes away from the world, they rejoice and thank God, and escort his body as if he were setting out from one place to another nearby. When a child is born to one of them, they praise God. If it dies in infancy, they thank God the more, as for one who has passed through the world without sins. But if one of them dies in his iniquity or in his sins, they grieve bitterly and sorrow as over one who is about to meet his doom.

Such O King, is the commandment given to the Christians, and such is their conduct. (The Apology of Aristides, translated by Rendel Harris [London: Cambridge, 1893])

What a testimony the early Christians had. How about the sacrifice of going without meals to provide food for others? What would be said about modern Christians?

Would anyone today say of Christians: Such is the commandment and such is their conduct? Maybe modern vernacular, “They actually do this stuff.” They actually believe what the Bible says and live it out. You can see it in the way they love each other and love the world. You can see it in their families. You can see it in their relationships. They genuinely care about others more than themselves. They are generous with their money. They love their God. What would be said to the King or President today? Would anyone notice a difference?

Thank you everyone who was praying about our Easter services this past Sunday. We had a tremendous day and God used a lot of people, prayers, and gifts to make it possible. People were up and at the theater before 6am setting up, so that we could be ready for our 8:00am service. The teams all did a fantastic job from set-up, to parking lot, first impressions, hospitality, tech, worship, Bridge Kids, ushers, response team, to tear-down. Thank you.

We are celebrating everything that God did this past weekend. Here are some highlights so you can rejoice with us.

For the first time in our 5 year history we had 3 services (8am, 9am and 10:30am). Over 100 people attended the 8am service (including kids).

We began a new series entitled: New Beginnings that will continue for the next four weeks. (See video below)

We had our highest attendance ever at 1096 total people.

We had the most kids we have ever hosted at Bridge Kids with 243 kids.

81 adults worked in Bridge Kids (we even had more volunteers than we needed). Thank you.

We had 172 people attend one of our 3 video venues.

We had 16 guests fill out connection cards which means 16 donations to our strategic partner WAR to free people from human trafficking.

We had roughly 150 people volunteer to connect people to Jesus for life change between our set-up, tear-down, parking lot, first impressions, hospitality, usher, tech, worship, Bridge Kids, response team, and Community Group teams.

We had a new response team ready to lead people to Jesus, and pray with anyone who desires to pray about any issue after each service. This team will be available from now on after all of our services. They will be wearing yellow name tags that say Response Team.

We had people raise their hands to indicate that they made a decision to trust Jesus Christ as their Savior. I honestly don’t know how many, but we praise God for each one (Luke 15:7; 10).

We are excited not simply about the numbers, but because each number represents a person. We desire to connect people to Jesus Christ for life change. The more people we have, the greater potential impact we can have for the glory of God!

Sometimes life doesn’t go exactly the way we expect it to go. In those moments wouldn’t it be great to be able to start over? Wouldn’t it be great to get a fresh start?

Many people seek a new beginning by changing jobs, or moving to a new city. Others jump from one relationship to another. Often times what we are actually doing is running from problems. Regardless of where we run, those problems have an interesting way of re-manifesting themselves in our new contexts. The reason this happens is because we don’t really have a new beginning. We have the same life and same problems simply in a new context.

What if we could truly have a fresh start? That is exactly what God offers us. Through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are offered a new way of life – a fresh start. This means we can actually have a NEW BEGINNING. God’s new beginning for you means a new kind of power, a new way of church, a new way of life and best of all, forgiveness for our sin.

If you are looking for a new beginning, I invite you to our new series starting this Sunday April 8th. If someone you know is looking for a new beginning, I challenge you to invite them this Sunday.

This Sunday is also Easter Sunday and we will be having 3 services at the Brier Creek Movie Theater 8am (with childcare for birth through 23 months), 9am (our regular engaging Bridge Kids ministry for birth through 5th grade) and 10:30am (Bridge Kids birth through 5th grade). If you are wondering what to expect, check out this video: What to Expect.

We have extra service opportunities this Sunday as we anticipate many new guests. If you are interested in serving on our First Impressions Team or with Bridge Kids, please sign up here: http://southbridgefellowship.com/easter-2012-volunteer

Join us in praying for 1200 people to attend and 100 to start a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Some ideas on how to invite people:

•	Post a link for our Easter services on your Facebook or Twitter accounts: http://southbridgefellowship.com/easter

•	Forward them the Southbridge Happenings email that will go out this week.

•	Send them a link to this blog post.

•	Go to our (Facebook Page here) and become a fan. Share postings from that site.

•	Use one of our invite cards to invite a neighbor, friend, waiter/waitress, people you meet at the grocery store etc.

I am spending a week on vacation with my family along with some great friends. One of whom is the man who led me to Jesus Christ about 17 years ago. So, I thought I would post something he taught me 17 years ago. I shared this in a sermon a few weeks ago and someone asked me to post.

When I first became a Christian the whole idea of spiritual warfare was foreign to me. People who talked about it seemed quit frankly, a little strange. Since that time I have learned just how real this battle is (Eph 6:12). I will never forget one of the first things I was told about spiritual warfare. My mentor told me, “Now that you are in God’s family, Satan can’t do anything to take you out of God’s family. However, what he wants to do is cut your legs out from under you and make you ineffective.”

At the time I was a Senior in High School and was on the track team. The image that came to my mind when I heard those words was one of a runner, running a race and jumping over a hurdle. When the runner jumped over the hurdle his legs were cut out from under him. He was out of the race. He was ineffective. It is true, he was still on the team, but he wasn’t accomplishing anything for the team.

What happens all the time is that people join the team, they trust Jesus Christ as Savior. That is an amazing thing. All of heaven rejoices (Luke 15), they are a child of God (John 1:12) and nothing can change that. However, very shortly after that decision they get their legs cut out from under them and find themselves on the sidelines watching a race they should be running in. Satan uses many things to cut our legs out from under us; depression, anxiety, cancer, divorce, discouragement, temptation, the list goes on. Essentially what happens is that as a result of these types of things we begin to believe lies like:

“God can’t use you.”
“You’re not committed enough.”
“If you really believed in God you would never _____.”
“You call yourself a Christian?” (hear demeaning tone)
“Real ministry is for the professionals or at least the really committed.”

Don’t get your legs cut out from under you. You are supposed to be in the race.

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
